The short answer is 'Not much' when it comes to out-of-province expenses.
Your provincial health plan pays a very limited amount for hospital stays, and won't be enough to cover you completely, especially if travelling in the US. Additional medical expenses such as ambulance costs, dental emergencies, repatriation, and prescribed drugs are not covered at all.
The Government of Canada's own site recommends that 'you should purchase the best travel insurance you can afford before you leave Canada.'
